<<<Also should I mess around with
humanise or similar at all on a snare? Seems like something that if overdone
could seriously annoy a dj.>>>
QUANTIZE!!!! NOT quantizing is an extremely powerful tool- one that should not be
messed with lightly, especially by (beginning) DnB producers. It's excellent for
making hip hop beats "smack" just right, but that shit is not something to joke around
with when yur making beatmatching music. DnB DJs have an insanely keen sense of timing
honed from years of listening to two (170 BPM!) records at the same time and getting
them to play together. I guarantee you the minute a DJ notices that your otherwise
stormin record has some wierd shit goin on HE WILL CHUCK IT. Alot of bedroom
producers here will tell you otherwise, talking ying yang about "artistic freedom" and
whatnot, but these are the same guys that don't know the feeling of sweat pouring down
their hands and faces as they struggle with the pitch control to avoid a train wreck
or the sweet joys of having 2 records locked and cutting the fader back and forth.
Now of course if your not making drum n bass for djs to play out, than do whatever the
hell yo
u want!!! But then again....theres more to the story...

There's actually a school of thought that believes that dance music always sounds
better "tight" anyway- that avoiding qantizing doesn't PUT life into your beats but
actually TAKES IT OUT (adjectives like "flat" "loose", "flabby", and "awkward" come to
mind- think of the difference between a cleanly compressed drum and a cardboardy,
uncompressed one). As it so happens that camp includes alot of DnB types who have
grown to love the characteristic "tightness" of the style. Some people feel it's
part of the genre's special flavor (kind of a militant, robotic, kung fu precision
type of thing). So on an even deeper level, yes, you SHOULD be shifting those
notes around here and there, but you should be shifting them to make stuff "lock on"
better, not "fall off". Of course, this second part is just a matter of opinion, but
its an opinion shared by quite a few in the know. Don't take my word for it, though
(I'd almost rather you not - what the fuck- should I give you ALL my secrets?) ;)

have fuunnnnnn..
