i've gotten great results using t-racks alone, the compression is fantastic 
imo. maybe your mixdown levels  are too high going into the mastering 
process? that make the compression sound funny, with a lot of "pumping and 
breathing" as they say. as a rule of thumb my mixdowns
never peak -2db. that gives me more headroom to play with during mastering..

i think this refers to when actaully recording the mixdown, which is true. 
i never use compression on an overall mix when i'm recording the mix. but, 
compression is most definitely used in mastering.
