As mutiny says, having some kind of chords in there is essential, becuase without these, you've got no reference point, so getting the vocals in to some sort of tuning could be a nightmare. Again, with a set rhythm, you've got a framework to use, and the vocals will be in sync. I've seen people in the studio go in with no particular melody and then do lots of takes, and cut up what they have. It also depends on how specific your ideas are on the song structure - i.e are you thinking of just using hooks or having a more standard verse, chorus etc type track.
