Sounds like it's wired 'out-of-phase' at your mates studio?

Check the wiring and make sure all the 'plus' and 'minus' (or red +
black, whatever) connections match. If you connect a 'plus' to a
'minus' you may experience problems as described.

Also, position the speakers at a slight angle, so they do not sit
head-on to the rear wall. This can cause the soundwave to bounce back
and cancel out certain frequencies.
