Hhhhhmmmm well, personally, I'm going the "both" route.  I already have a $5,000 hardware studio, but I realised that, at this point, most of it is crap.  I suggest you NOT skimp on monitors...... I did, and I bought some OK ones.. but you defnitely want the best you can buy.... i.e. -> Mackies.  I got Alesis..hehe

I'm going to save $6000 to $8000 on a studio this next yr, and I've decided to spend it on:
$1000 - vinyl (for my DJ habit. hehe)
$500 - new DJ mixer
$400 - FX module.. probably Lexicon or TC Electronics
$300 - hardware EQ
$500+ on a REALLY dope compresser
$300 - Rode NT1 mic
$1500 - huge Mackie board with loads of channels..... or... a nice digital desk
$900 - MOTU digital interface for hard-disk recording
$2000 - Virus Indigo 2 or Nord Lead 3 (when the price comes down)  BOTH of these are COMPLETELY, UTTERLY, SICK

minus one or two things... I think I went over my limit here but I think you get the point.  Get some great software plug ins, sequencers, sound editors, and loop-manglers, but whether you pay for the real thing or not is up to you....... I know when I have the money, EVENTUALLY I will buy all the shit I have (Logic, Cubase, Fruity, Softsynths, etc)

$3500 left over for a lot of weed. you don't even
need new software or anything! pro is a relative term.
wares will not make you a pro. skillz, time, and
knowledge will.

Subject: [dnb-prod] What wares do I need to sound like pro?

I am wanting to invest in some new hardware/software so I can start some
serious production. Right now, I am running Acid Pro
and Fruityloops on my PC and have a butt load of samples. What else do I
need to look at? Lets say I have $5000 to spend on
building the perfect studio, what should I buy?
