What you need is something that u cannot buy -

experience is the key - you can have all the gear in the world and still
make tunes that sound like arse.

Dont go spending a shed load of money on top range equipement until you
know whats going on.

I spent 18 months slaving away on Buzz tracker and various other PC
programs
learing the dynamics of sounds, and what effects compression / filters etc
have.

But if you must purchase some hardware I'd suggest a sampler first.

I picked up an EMU5000ultra for about 899 a while back. Although I know
the Yamaha A3000 are also top machines and the effects at the prest level
are a bonus over the EMU. You can prob pick a second hand one up for around
500 maybe less.

Compressor is the cheapest most essential piece of equipment IMO after the
sampler.
They really bring things to life and I think that it will give the
"professional sound" that you
are looking for.

After that u may want a small desk, then maybe a synth or other FX unit.

Hope this helps.
