Title: RE: [dnb-prod] RE: Mad basses
If you're asking me to defend my claim
I can't verbally describe what I hear exactly,
but you cannot disclude the bad sampled & well known
sampled group from the list cuz alot of whats out there
falls under this category. If you use sampled bass, fine,
make it less obvious but the truth is, you'd rather be making
your own, so use your time to learn how. But I don't want to
get into the morality of it all cuz it doesnt matter.

Audibly there are subtle differences in fluidity and sound you can
hear between generated bass and sampled bass. Samples
usually triggered at the same note & speed are harder to
distinguish as samples, but since bass is used like a lead
instument in DnB, it tends to change notes, and this is where
you hear it most. Like when the LFO speed on the reese bass
becomes slower as the note goes lower, that really obvious difference
is a characteristic that can be picked out in other less obvious
examples.

I have a friend who can instantly tell between analog & digitally
generated sounds.. I've tried to ask him what he hears
that is so different, and it doesnt make sense when he
describes it. But he can hear it.. why, because he's worked with
analog generated sounds extensivly.

I don't claim to be an expert on figuring out sampled bass,
cuz I don't care about it, or use it, but it's done more often
than not, and more often than not I CAN pick it out.

I'm intrigued!

Please explain how you can pick out the difference between a sampled, or created bassline in a trax. Excluding the obvious such as 'identical to well known sampled trax', or 'badly sampled bassline'.

Peace

Martyn

The key to making a good bass is knowing your audio theory well..
and knowing what to add a touch of and what to add alot of.
Knowing where to place it & where to space it.

You can spend hours & hours trying to get one and still not have it,
don't get frustrated, just keep trying.. you'll get it one day, and it will
be worth it..

When i figured out my formula for it, i was as happy as a little school
girl.
and you realize all the time you spent to get the enlightenment, was more
than worth it.

Now, having done that, I can instanlty pick out a sampled bass sound in
a tune and it kinda disgusts me that half of what makes up drum & bass
is being ripped off so readily. Even by big name guys.

Don't be one of those guys.
