there is no rule for doing it to one element and
not the other. subtractive is a good place to start
because you ALWAYS tend to push knobs up.

on old breaks I always end up using both.
subtracting nasal muddy crap around 300hz
adding sparkle and shine to the top by either
boosting the top end or removing more of
the lower frequencies.
