any good engineer will tell you that it is ALWAYS better to subtract eq than to push the knobs up.   when you add eq it is an "unnatural" addition to the sound the quality of which depends on the quality of the mixer/plugin your using.  essentially your goal should be is to CLEAN UP your sounds by removing frequencies that are unnecessary or conflict with other instruments. Good habits are to remove anything below the subbass range (about 60 khz) on anything thats not subbass, cutting most everything except neccesary hi frequencies on things like hi hats, and keeping an eye on the area around 250 khz, the vulnerable "muddy " range  ( i e any sound that doenst need to have frequencies here, cut if you can- usually pad sounds qualify for  a cut here).
