I see getting http adopted and deployed, and fixing the single major web-specific deficiency in DNS, as critical to attempting to head off DoH, which is the biggest bugbear at the moment.

But please, let's not get into that argument. The only way to stave off adding complexity in the DNS to fix the CNAME at apex problem is with the cooperation of the browser vendors (and as Tim notes, the major authoritative operators). We need their help, just like they need ours.
