Hi Everyone:

That is often a rule in more formal technical documentation that depersonalizes the communication. In the Sun Editorial Style Guide, those of us who write product documentation are told to write in the second person. For example, "You can do this, you lucky sysadmin." That might not be a requirement in the OpenSolaris Style Guide. Interestingly enough, I've had more than one Sun engineer correct my writing by crossing out, or complaining about that "you," and insisting that I change it to "the system administrator" -- third person. I personally don't like the use of "I"in technical documentation because it sounds like opinion. Someone else's opinion might be different and just as valid. First person is more than appropriate for blogs and signed articles. And that's my opinion. - Steff
