It's not typical.  You're going to have to take it to a place that has
a scanner capable of reading the airbag system's codes to determine
what's wrong.  It sounds like it might be something as simple as a
connection or ground problem, but without access to the fault codes
it's nearly impossible to say.  You're probably looking at a repair
bill in the couple-of-hundred dollars range.
