As for types of of rotors. There are different terms
thrown around like vented, slotted, and crossdrilled.
All front rotors should be vented. Venting just means
the middle of the rotor is hollow and there are
fins/blades alonmg the outside to maove air through
the rotor to cool and remove brake dust. If you have
a vented rotor laying flat it will look like a
sandwich. Now slotting and cross drilling are a
completely different thing. They are concepts used on
race rotors to help prevent the pads from
gassing(getting so hot that a layer of gas is created
between the pad and rotor and braking power is
reduced). So on some rotors you'll see a series of
holes(cross drilling) and some you'll see diagonal
slots(slotting). The realitity is that most people
are suckered by the slotting and cross drilling thing.
DO NOT buy slotted or cross drilled rotors from
advanced auto, track auto or just about any other
major parts place. Unless you are talking to serious
brake companies that are entrenched in racing like
Baer, Brembo, Wilwood, etc. I highly recommend you
stay away from the slotted and cross drilled gimmicks.
Slotting and Cross Drilling(S/CD) will have a reverse
effect on cars like ours in regular driving
situations. S/CD removes surface material from the
rotor. So under normal driving circumstances your
braking distances will INCREASE because you have less
rotor material to dispate heat. Also the S/CD designs
will wear your pads much faster. they have like a
cheese grater effect on your pads removing material
much faster than a solid rotor. Not to mention that
removing material(especially in cross drilled rotors)
weakens the rotor. Stress cracks are very common in
el cheapo ricer cast(as opposed to forged) S/CD
rotors. They've even shattered on vehicles when they
are left on too long. Not to say a standard rotors
can't crack and shatter, but it happens faster and
more frequently with S/CD rotors. And lets face it
those racing S/CD rotors are usually replaced with
high frequency.

Just a word to the wise. Stay away from Slotted and
Cross drilled rotors unless you're ready to drop big
$$$ on a big name brake with a lifetime warranty on
the rotor. Other wise go with a thicker quality
rotor(like a KVM) which will better take the abuse
most of use dish out everyday.

JMHO,
Mike
