It's a common misconception that the coolant needs to be in any part of the
cooling system in order to "absorb" heat or to radiate it away.

More flow always = more cooling.  Very simply, the faster the liquid moves
through the system, the more opportunity it has to gather heat within the
engine and take it out to the radiator.  The fact that the coolant doesn't
"spend enough time in the radiator to get cool" is actually a benefit to
cooling.  The higher the temperature of the radiator, the more efficiently
it operates.

Taking the thermostat out of this engine in the temps that the O.P. is
talking about is a sure recipe for an engine that will never come up to
temperature.  He will almost certainly have no cabin heat, and he will
experience accelerated engine wear due to sub-optimal engine oil temps.
If he purchased a quality thermostat the last time he changed it, and that
was relatively recently, the possibility that the thermostat is the problem
is exceedingly low.

Agreed.  I think it is very likely he has an internal leak causing a loss of
coolant.
