Valvetrain clatter, perhaps? Get a mechanic's stethoscope ($5-6 at Autozone, Murray's, etc.) and have somebody start up the car for you while you probe around under the hood. > That and there is excessive belt noise. BTDT on this one. I found out the hard way that there are two belts available that will fit the A/C on a 98 3.2L Intrepid. You need the one marked 'heavy duty' -- yes, it's the same size, but there is a difference. I discovered this once I banged the motor off the rev limiter on the freeway and popped the belt loose. It took the serpentine with it, and suddenly I had no power steering! The rear defogger is fused. Check that. If you find it's blown, assume that there's a short somewhere, and start looking for it. Oh, and if you plan on doing your own work, either get familiar with your local public library in Southeast Michigan (they typically have subscriptions to AllData) or purchase the factory shop manual.
