Sure, I'll take a swing at it, anyway (I'm no chemist!) The G-05 blend is what was factory fill on 2nd generation Intrepids from 1998 all the way through 2004. Zerex supplied the stuff to DaimlerChrysler, and it's a HOAT chemistry. Much has been written about HOAT vs OAT chemistry online, and I can't do it much justice other than to say that the HOAT stuff doesn't eat away at the gaskets used in Chrysler engines, while OAT chemistry (Dexcool) does.
If you noticed at the auto parts stores, the selection of different antifreezes started getting confusing. You had regular ol' green stuff, the Dexcool-compatible products, and then the G-05 products. People would put Dexcool into non-GM makes, and it would cause all sorts of problems down the road. In response to this, the antifreeze makers came up with a new chemistry intended to have a nearly universal application: it would work in place of "green stuff", OAT and HOAT. There has been some debate online as to whether or not the new stuff is as effective a corrosion preventative as the original chemistries were, and I personally question whether or not the stuff is as harmless as the HOAT stuff my vehicle was designed for. Since the original stuff is still available, that's what I prefer to use. Any benefits I might be missing out on with the new chemistry are completely outweighed by the peace of mind I get from knowing that I won't be replacing headgaskets because of any unforeseen problems caused by the non-spec antifreeze. If it makes me an antifreeze Luddite, well, at least I know exactly what I'm buying. --Geoff On 9/15/06, Nathan E.
