It certainly would be easier to take it to someone, but most junkyard trannies
have 90 day warranties and if they work the first time usually they are good
for their average life span. The junk yard I went to pretested the tranny to
confirm it worked. Most major yards do this. I think the advantage of the
junk yard tranny is cost. I was able to swap my tranny for $300-400 and a few
days worth of elbow grease. The quotes I was given ranged from $1800-2400.
I'm not sure if a new or rebuilt tranny will give you a better warranty, but my
junk yard tranny has been running for 30K+ miles now and no major issues.
(knock on wood)

To the original poster, one thing you need to note in the second gen LH's the
2.7L engine(and the 3.5L out of the 300M Special) has a slightly higher gear
ratio. Some people actually seek these trannies out for this higher gear ratio
as it will give you more acceleration off the line at the cost of gas mileage.
But just be aware of this. I stayed away from this for the gas mileage as well
as I didn't want to have to recalibrate my speedometer.

You can make the 2nd gen transmission work as another poster has said,
although it would be simpler to find one out of a 1st gen car. The
3.3Ldrivetrain was used in a lot of vehicles, but you want one from an
Intrepid,
Concorde, LHS, New Yorker or Eagle Vision from '93 to '97. All the LH body
cars should have a usable transmission. The ones from the minivans won't
work, nor will the ones from the AC body cars ( 92 and earlier Dynasty, New
Yorker, etc.)

You might be further ahead having your current transmission rebuilt than
playing your luck at the junkyard. Unless the case is cracked it is almost
certainly rebuildable, although if you find a large amount of metal chips in
the pan it might be cheaper to go with a junkyard unit -- but for best
results I'd have the junkyard unit rebuilt unless it's 60-70K miles or less.
