Greetings Fellow Intrepid Lovers.

Sadly, I tell you that I have parted ways with my '96 3.5L. Had it in the
local for $2500, and had no calls, so put it back for $1750. Got 1 call. They
came, they looked, they bought. $1500. Since we have no need for a second
vehicle right now, I'm glad to see it put to good use, and not have to sit.
Maybe, someday, I'll be able to get another. I'll keep up on the group chat
through ;)

No argument there. I thought being talked down from $2500 would
hopefully land me somewhere in the $1500 to $1750 range. In our local trade
magazine "The Uncle Henry's Reader" 96-97 treps go from $500 in sad shape to
$3000 with around 85-90k.

Unfortunately in all the years that those "blue book" and other values have
been readily available online, I have never found a dealership that even
came close to those prices. It's not for a lack of negotiation skills; I
usually manage to do alright with that sort of thing. The last trade in I
did, I learned that the dealership was using a table of vehicle values
compiled by the local automotive auction house; it was apparently thought by
the dealership to be more in line with what local market conditions were
than the national books. I was surprised by the $2200 offer; it was the
highest offer I saw out of about 4 or 5 of them, the lowest was $500. I
really expected no more than about $1800.

Would you pay $4000 for a 98 Intrepid 3.2L with 118K miles? Even one with
good sheetmetal, working A/C, and good tires? I wouldn't. It's too much
for a 9 year-old car with close to 120,000 miles on it. Tops I'd pay about
3000, and it would have to be *perfect*. There are just too many other
low-mileage alternatives out there, and too many things can go wrong with a
car at that mileage with that amount of electronic goodies (mine was an
ES).
