Shell now makes aero oils for light sport aircraft engines. The "Aero Shell Sports plus4" comes highly recommended for rotax motors but it looks like it's not suitable for fully air cooled motors. "DO NOT use AeroShell Oil Sport Plus 4 in engines that are designed to use Ashless Dispersant aviation piston engine oils such as AeroShell W Oils. This includes aircooled Teledyne Continental Motors, Textron Lycoming and Jabiru engines" They also have a multigrade semi synthetic which is suitable for these type of engines. I guess one argument is that we should just treat the limbach as an auto motor and use good auto oil. My main interest is to explore oils that may give us better valve/seat life in the relatively high head temps we operate at. We have been using Penrite which has been pretty good but I might explore what the VW racing people are using. Rob

The clearances and tollerances in Lycoming etc. are massive compared to Limbach - automotive derived. It wrecks catalytic converters and has become less useful in modern motors so is being reduced in modern auto oils. I'm think of switching to an aero oil (possibly shell http://www.shell.com/home/content/aviation/products/lubricants/piston_engine_oils/ ) Has anyone got any recommendations? I am wondering about using motorcycle oils if they are OK with avgas. http://www.rotax-owner.com/rotax-blog/item/8-oils-a-fluid-discussion Rob PO Box 129, Lawson, NSW, 2783. mobile 0429 493828 ............................................. --- On Tue, 20/9/11, Tom Preisser <[email protected]> wrote: From: Tom Preisser <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [DOG mailing list] Dimona Aileron question To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Received: Tuesday, 20 September, 2011, 8:58 PM Problems ??
