Yeh the grade of paper is to stop you from damaging the outer glass layer. 
Probably faster to use an angle grinder with 80 grit paper disk and laminate a 
replacement layer afterwards but that does require repair qualifications and 
thus why they want you to use a fine grit paper.

I'm probably jumping the gun on Nige here and taking words out of his mouth.

He said that he believes the terms 'plate' and 'panel' to be synonymous in the 
translation process. This makes so much better sense when you read the work 
order. i too was thinking the translation was from German to English but as Col 
Brock pointed out it is probably from Austrian to English. 

Nige said that the upper and lower surfaces of the spar tunnel are non 
structural and that he had cut a large inspection 'panel' out of the lower 
surface for another task which verifies that. It is the front and rear of the 
tunnel which is structural.

I just had a look at the worker order for the root rib again. i'm cant see any 
requirement for gelcoat removal inside the wing Ian. It calls for complete 
removal of the paint from the outside of the root rib, coating with a clear 
epoxy resin to reseal and and which will enhance crack detection in the outer 
root rib.  the paint removal is a bugger of a job as supposed to be done with 
160 grade paper or finer.

That is exactly the thing has brought me to a stop as seems solid to me 
Thinking we should get the German version and have dieter Hildenbrand see what 
he thinks as his 3000hly is due in 200hrs. In wings we had no gelcote on the 
inner D section of wing as they speak of removing the Gelcote and we have the 
hole already cut

                It is absolutely necessary to make this connection?.
