Consider buying an electric tacho designed for a diesel engine. Very cheap from boating shops. They connect to the alternator terminal which will be labeled P T S or W depending on the brand. Bosch is W. If your alternator does not have one of these terminals you need to remove the back plastic cover of the alternator and solder a wire onto one of the phases on the winding side of the diodes.
