Tim, I don't have the skill to know what to edit manually. I booted from a Kubuntu 10.10 live disk and it gave me the option to install - as a new partition- on the big main disk. Also Dolphin showed all the partitions/disks and I could see all(?) the contents.
I have used a utility that I found called 'Rescatux' to rebuild grub, which it did, but kubuntu 11. went into reboot cycle. So I chose an older version from the grub menu, the failsafe option, and again rebuilt grub. From this I can choose the option to 'load normally' and i end up at the command line. Cannot get gui on 10.10 yet though, and if I can get that running I will try and upgrade again. AFAIK the BIOS isn't concerned with screen resolution so it's presumably getting to Grub and beyond? There's always the option of uploading a low-res. photo of the screen with the error to http://tinypic.com/ or similar. > When I try to install from a Cd that I created, it cannot find my > first hard disk, and wants to install on SCS1 which is my small second > data disk. This CD is a recent Live Linux CD? Get to a shell prompt from within it and try `ls /dev/disk/by-id', there should be one symbolic link per drive and partition, or see what `dmesg | grep '\<sd'' shows from boot-time. > My only thought is to try and rebuild the machine using kubuntu 10.10. > My feeling is that grub is gone. That wouldn't explain the Live CD not knowing that drive existed. Is it visible in gparted, GNU's GUI partition editor?
