Partly this is a test. 

I did it from the alternative disk, after saving my Home stuff out to
memory stick. It wasn't easy because of finding the partitioning
information. I ended up emptying, and then I think deleting and
recreating the sda5 partition, and discovering how to make it the root
partition. I wonder if I could do it again. 

Restored all the stuff from the memory stick, and installed evolution,
which is how I got to here. But I have lost all my old emails and
address book.
