I wish I was that clever Peter, unfortunately I am not.

As I understand it your current installation is a mix of 10.10 and 11. If it 
was 
me while you have access to your data,I would copy all the data that you want 
to keep (basicly your home directory) off your hard disk (on to a USB memory 
stick, USB hard disk or CD\DVD) and then do format the hard disk and do a fresh 
install Kubuntu 11. At least that way if you do have a problem you will only be 
have to resolve Kubuntu 11 problems and not a mish-mash of kubuntu 10 and 11 
problems
