The trouble is this is a cheap commodity unit that is really designed as a 
media server.  Although it runs Linux under the bonnet, Netgears runs its own 
interface layer which can only be accessed though their Browser Config page.  
I can get at files in the User area through SMB/CIFS and (allegedly) through 
FTP, but I can't get root priviledges to install anything else or change 
anything they don't want me to change.

I don't mind that, as long as the advertised features work as advertised.  
Netgear Support are investigating why I can't get in.......
