Well. It *was* the username. I have a mixed case username, which was setup
using the Stora browser based config tool. This has always worked fine for
everything I've ever done, including logging in to access my files through a
browser and/or SMB/CIFS.

It turns out that the username is converted to lowercase before being stored
in the FTP server. The reason? People kept forgetting that their usernames
were mixed case and so they couldn't log in!! Of course, all those, (like me)
who didn't forget the case of their usernames can no longer login when they
entered them correctly.

As the Yanks would say 'Go figure'. Hang on, these are Yanks.
