Before considering option of getting new PSU / getting laptop to replace it / getting new desktop / installing linux on spare old laptop to see if it can be used for internet stuff, I just wanted to check if this could be something obvious I'm missing (I'm not very knowledgeable about hardware)? I've opened up the tower and checked/pushed all the power cables but no success.

Hi Natalie,

It does sound like the PSU is dead as other stuff would most likely manifest as a partial failure (i.e. the machine would boot so far, or you would at least see the power light come on and hear the fans spin up). I think I have a spare in the loft that you are welcome to try if the thought of lashing out on a new one worries you.

It is worth trying another power lead if you have one handy, and trying another socket, as this will rule out more fundamental failures.

Also, someone reported a dead CMOS battery preventing their machine from booting on the Hants list recently, with the machine being revived when a new one was purchased.
