Are the files you gave Calibre which it now fails to open still visible as files, even if it's put them somewhere else? They will probably be *.pdf or *.epub. ‘file foo.pdf bar.epub’ will confirm they're the type of file suggested by their name. ‘firefox foo.pdf’ will display the PDF in Firefox. ‘mupdf bar.epub’ displays an EPUB. This will show you still have the original files so don't need to get them again.
