Hello! Nobody is complaining but it's been a long time I haven't published our newsletter. This is not because our project is sleeping as you'll see. This is because I hadn't the time!!! So here is our newsletter, please enjoy :).
All the best, JM. PS: if you think that I forgot to mention an important news, feel free to answer this mail with your scoop! Team ===== * Matti Aronen (daMage) joined the Finnish team and is already at work. Welcome to our project! Organization =========== * Google Summer of Code 2012 (GSoC) is open. We'd like to participate to this event that pays students to work on open source software [1]. Gérald and I have written a page of 12 ideas [2]. Mentoring organizations need to apply to GSoC before the 9th March. We should be on time. * I've been contacted by the DuckDuckGo folks [3], the raising search engine with much better privacy settings [4]. I'm currently discussing with them the economic model issue of their search engine. If you've been using DuckDuckGo for a long period, I'm interested in knowing your feelings. Replacing the default search engine (Google) is an idea we've been having in mind for a while [5]. * I propose that the DDL Association signs against the Restricted Boot tentative of several IT companies. Letting them do would prevent us from running DDL on any computer in a quite near future… [1] https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2012-02/msg00001.html [2] http://team.doudoulinux.org/projects/growth-contests/wiki/GSoC_2012_ideas [3] http://duckduckgo.com/ [4] http://duckduckgo.com/privacy.html [5] http://team.doudoulinux.org/issues/75 [6] https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2012-03/msg00001.html Translations ============ * Translations were submitted on Transifex for Finnish (daMage), Malay (Puretech) and Swedish (Omnitrax). Development =========== * Gérald started to work on the armhf port of DDL. The previous port was using armel, a slower implementation. * He's also started to hack on ARM™ servers that will be used later to setup a Debian package build server for our project. This will ease the management of 3 versions of DDL (Gondwana, development and experimental) on 4 architectures (i386, amd64, armel and armhf). * I'm still working on moving the LiveCD tricks into Debian packages. I've solved several translations issues for Dansguardian and the DDL environment. The difficulty is that during a Live build, the language is not set and translations are not available… The remaining work is now quite small :). * I re-installed DDL for my children (on an old laptop and an USB-key) starting from a minimal installation of Debian. These are then not Live systems although the USB key can boot on any computer (Live system are compressed and read-only). A blog post to come soon on this topic. * I spent many hours in browsing the entire set of games in Debian in order to find new interesting games. The effort is worth being done: raincat, biniax, magicor, pixbros, fillets-ng, hex-a-hop, burgerspace, ri-li, monsterz, frogatto, numpty-physics, etc. may enter DDL soon, at least on the ARM™ image or a future DVD version. Give them a try! * I rebuilt CD images with a 486 kernel. They can be used on older computers with a processor Pentium 2 or older, or an equivalent. Several people were annoyed with the restrictions brought by our 686 kernel. These builds are being uploaded onto our dailybuild section [1]. * I've just sent a mail about our next releases. The end of Gondwana is coming! [2] [1] http://download.doudoulinux.org/dailybuild/realtime.php [2] https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2012-03/msg00007.html Artwork ======= * Frédéric draw the poster for FOSDEM [1]. Nice work! Unfortunately it couldn't be printed in size A0 but only A4 :p. [1] http://blog.doudoulinux.org/post/2012/02/09/FOSDEM-2012 Website ======= * A lot of work achieved on the Russian part of the project with 6 German articles published. Communication ============= * Xavier put up posters of DDL on walls during FOSDEM [1]. He also managed to tell about our project on Bonjour Mozilla [2]. Good job! * I recall that Salvatore launched the translation of our Wikipedia article into English []. The idea is to split the effort among several translators who understand Latin languages. Unfortunately we're still lacking of volunteers :(. [1] http://blog.doudoulinux.org/post/2012/02/09/FOSDEM-2012 [2] https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2012-02/msg00006.html [] https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-docs/2011-10/msg00056.html Support ======= * Several support requests were received from people unable to install or even run DDL on their hardware. Issues were ranging from bootloader not wanting to boot to a kernel not fitting the (old) processor. We're using a 686 kernel that cannot boot on Pentium 2 and older versions.
