Hello! A lot of activity on the development side during the past weeks, concerning ARM and the advanced activities user interface. A lot of activity on the translation side too, after DistroWatch told about our latest development version 2012-03. The switch from Gondwana to the development version hasn't occurred due to all this work, but it's now on the rails. The latest Gondwana update, version 1.2, is being uploaded as a pre-release.
All the best, JM. PS: if you think that I forgot to mention an important news, feel free to answer this mail with your scoop! Team ===== Many new contributors joined on Transifex since DistroWatch has talked about our latest development release: * xabiervillar, Gallaecio (Adrián Chaves Fernández) and mglbranco (Miguel Branco) joined the Galician team. * almehdi (Daniel Sandman) and johnnyolsson joined the Swedish team. * DO_Transi (Duaa Orabi) joined the Arabic team. * sumodirjo (Muhammad Panji) joined the Indonesian team. * sikaish and AndrisK (Andris Krišlauks) joined the Latvian team. Many of them are already at work. Welcome to our project! We also had a contributor leave: * Filar left the Polish team, thanks for your past contribution! Organization =========== * I received the contract from DuckDuckGo (see [1]). I will sign it on behalf of Association DoudouLinux, our non-profit organization. * I contacted the LXDE community, with poor results indeed… I got very little reactions, just a laconic mail to tell us to use their ticket management software and to contact an Ubuntu guy developing a new version of lxlauncher. I also had private contacts with Mélodie who's participating into PCLinuxOS Education but I don't think there are many ways to work together. * We've been contacted by Joerg Scheurich, developer of “white_dune 4kids”, a 3D animation creation software [2]. It has been used by children (6-13) to create a short animation [3]. While his software looks interesting, it cannot create movie files directly yet, only VRML files that need a special browser plugin to be watched. * Membership and donations to our association are open [4]. That's not really a problem because, due to lots of development tasks, I still haven't found the time for this switch. I now hope to do it within 1 or 2 weeks. We'll have at least 3 new languages: Galician, Finnish and Norwegian Nynorsk. * Special congratulations to the Galician team who achieved 98% of translation rate on Transifex in quite a short time! I'm going to release the very first Galician CD of DDL :). * Miguel highlights the fact that we should provide a text version of our audio messages [1]. He's right, the question is where to put these texts? Certainly on SVN, but is this enough? [1] https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-lang/2012-04/msg00003.html Development =========== * Gérald made Plymouth, the animated boot, work on ARM, thanks to the help from Genesi's developers [1]. * Gérald also published a new ARM build on the dailybuild section [2]. This build is downloaded almost every day, the mean is 1-2 ARM image per day. * Gérald is now working on cleaning his script that builds the ARM image, as well on the faster ARM port of Debian called armhf. * Gérald proposes to use the Live installer from Linux Mint as a replacement for the DDL installer, while I have no news from Constantin (who wanted to provide a new DDL installer). I think these discussions should take place on the mailing list. Xavier draw a diagram of the installer logic. * I patched Lxpanel to have a better look & feel in DDL's advanced activities, read the blog article to know more [3]. * I fixed the issue with special keys on laptops that didn't work (sound volume, brightness). This is the new package “laptop-hotkeys”. * I also fixed the issue with the low battery message that was triggering a screen resolution change when you were playing a game that runs in real fullscreen. The trick was to change of on-screen notification software (gnome-osd instead of a standard window with zenity). * I coded “unique-launch”, a wrapper tool used to be sure children won't launch more than one instance of the same application. The tool is able to give focus back to an application, even if wound (only the title bar is displayed), when the user re-clicks its launcher icon. See the demo video on our blog [4]. * I've uploaded several dailybuilds of the development version [5]. * I'm currently building the pre-release of the latest Gondwana update, 1.2 [6]. It won't be available in every languages before several days, due to build and upload time. They'll land in the dailybuilds section. changes are mainly translations, plus 2 backported features: lxlauncher icon size adapted to screen size, internal disks mounted read-only and only readable by root. * I created the missing tags and branches on SVN for our releases Gondwana 1.1, 2011-08, 2011-11 and 2012-03. Website ======= No news. Communication ============= * Xavier started to talk with ANIS, a French non-profit organization promoting the reuse of old computers, on behalf of the Association DDL. * Marian reported that we had a very great article on linux.com [1]. * Xavier wrote a documentation (in French currently) on how to use DDL in VirtualBox [2]. * I recall that Salvatore launched the translation of our Wikipedia article into English [3]. The idea is to split the effort among several translators who understand Latin languages. Unfortunately we're still lacking of volunteers :(. We then really need to provide a new installer, that is a real installer… This issue was reported by Oscar who also posted on our forum list [2].
