Neat rado, Huh? I recently got my second, I had one 10 years ago and sold
it when I moved here in 1996.

That's caused by two things, With the exception of a few countries that
have opened up 7100-7200, 40 meters for most of the world is 7000-7100.
We don't have a choice. Your inability to use those frequencies for
voice along with the digital signals up there eat up 40m for many hams.

The 7100-7300 band is almost unuseable here anyway, in order to work
split you need to be able to pick out a relatively weak SSB signal sent
on a small antenna from among megawatt AM signals sent out with
huge antennas only one skip away. Many broadcasters go to sleep around
2-3 AM but then so do I. :-)

Digital used to be a neat idea and needed to be fostered. When the digital
signals clustered around 7090, it was ok, but they have snuck down well
below 7050. In many CEPT countries the class B, aka "general" hams
only have any privledges from 7050 to 7100. Imagine how they feel.

40 meters aside, it does hold up well use it well and enjoy it. Maybe
some day when the sun spots return we can work each other on 20m.

Geoff.
