Word has it that a 470K or higher resistor in series with the audio
line will help with that. Assuming the pre-amp is disconnected, of
course.

The advantage os the Astatic TUG8-D104 is that they were a popular CB
mic and can sometimes be found at garage sales for as little as $5.
Five minutes with a soldering iron removes that abominable pre-amp.
