That's the direction that I'm leaning as I spread this thing out in front of
me. I'll use my handy-dandy tube of no longer obtainable Radio Shack Teflon
grease that works on everything I've ever tried it on.

I had to. It looks like someone had over-oiled the bearing race and the goo
dribbled all over the place. I suspect this was what ended up coating the
gears. And that resulted in everything in the area being "fuzzy". So I've got
the gears all cleaned up now, and they look to be in very good shape. I'm
working on the lubricant-jam now.
