Well first off, the Carr Bal pot is a multi-turn pot, which will reach the "end" eventually! You can feel a slight difference when you get to the end, but it will keep turning. I really don't know how many turns there are, probably between 5 and 10 complete revolutions. Since you have no idea where it is now, you might as well turn it one way until it stops, then start turning the other way, counting turns until it stops. Then turn back half that many turns to approximately center it.

If you don't have access to a scope, your best bet might be turn the GAIN pot all the way CCW, and then tune in the 9.00 MHz Carr Osc on another receiver. Once you have centered the pot, then adjust T-14 while watching the S-Meter on the receiver for a null. Then alternately adjust the pot and T-14 for minimum on the S-meter of the receiver.

Full drive regardless of XMTR GAIN setting sounds like an oscillation somewhere, or you are tuning to something other than the "real" frequency the transceiver is set for. Does it drop if you detune the RF TUNE or turn to another band? Regardless, be sure and keep the Final plate current dipped and LOAD to min until you resolve the problem.

Well, maybe you guys can tell me what I did wrong. During a routine alignment of my late model TR-4 I found that when rotating the carrier balance pot it didn't stop at either end. It also had no effect on the plate current and t-14 had no effect either. Of course I could only guess as to where these two components were before I moved them, but now when tuning the rig the xmtr gain control has no effect. The transmitter is getting full drive no matter where the gain control is set. PS bias is acting normally. I sure hope someone here has run into this before. The receive improvement is substantial after this alignment. Thanks.
