Got this from Thomas a few minutes ago...
Well Garey, thanks for the help. The problem seemed to be that I knew
the car bal pot was about a ten and a half turn pot, but I thought it
would come to a STOP, not just a slight drag. After you said it would
keep turning but would drag a little, I went back and carefully felt for
that piont. Then I counted about 10 turns before it dragged a VERY
little again. Did the book procedure from there and everything works
well. It's amazing to me how a simple alignment can improve the
receiver performance so much. This thing works very well now. Thanks
for your help.

The carrier null pot is a vernier drive. Sometimes the grease will
dry out and the shaft only will turn. You need to unsolder the bottom
cover plate and try washing out the insides with contact cleaner.
