I've not tried this for the PTO but it might work, use at your own risk.  
There are silicon greases out there that have an extremely wide temperature 
range, outside what humans can live in so that should take care of low and high end 
concerns.  I've used it for automotive applications, garage doors, etc. Only 
place I know of that sells retail right now is Surplus Sales of Nebraska.
