Hi folks, I think Bill started this?
I suspect the carrier isn't balanced - i.e. isn't centered between the filters. If 80 & 20m sound tinny, the other bands will sound bassy, or vice versa. Follow the manual procedure, it's not difficult. It can be gotten very close just by listening to the hiss when you switch sidebands on receive. Or/and you could get some on the air help in listening to each sideband, and adjusting so they sound the same - or just get someone to listen to your tinny-ness and adjust the carrier a bit to get it sounding right. Then chk the other one and see if it's close. The early TR-3 & -4's had more of a problem, their filter centers would drift, or one would go bad, and the similar problem couldn't be fixed short of replacing the filter, but that's not often the case with the filters in the twins, they're on a different freq., and rarely seem to fail.
   hope this helps,

Hello
This is often the case with drakes their audio is tinny sounding . Mine are the same way R4B - T4XB. If anyone knows of a way to custom tailor or pad the audio to let a few lows through I'd like to hear it.

I have had this discussion before with a few guys and they thought that carrier balance could be off or the filters are not where they should be or component values have changed over the years. If that is the case I would not really know how to attack the problem .

Maybe someone who had a Drake new back in the day could tell the group if this is just normal comm. audio..

Hello to all,
Just purchased a beautiful set of drake twins, r4 and t4x, they are an absolute joy to operate. My only problem is with the tx audio. I get reports of it being very trebly (if thats a word). I am using a shure 444 with it. Hope to enjoy these rigs for a long time. I sold a ts 2000 to purchase them and I am glad I did. Love the vintage tube stuff!!
Tnx
