Ok Guys
I tried a different mic today and it seemed to be better, I also tried putting some foam from another mic on the element of the 444 and it helped take some of the brassiness out of it. I will try and get on the net on Sunday and see if it sounds ok to them. Thanks so much for the help, I believe I like this setup better than my Ts 2000. the only thing it had was vhf/uhf which I didn't use!

I have a B line and a TR4. I use a shure 450 mic on the B line and the audio is rich and not tinny. I have a D104 on my TR4 and it has a 750K resistor in series with the audio line to reduce the highs. Yet, it is more high pitched and I use that advantage for working DX, I work the mic close.. not 3 inches away, I use enough mic gain to deflect the plate current meter. around 11 o'clock. Pay attention to the 12AX7 mic amplifier tube. Replace it if necessary, or sub it with the other 12AX7. Try to get on the Drake net on Sunday at 2000Z at 7138 so our technical people can hear your audio. Also, Make sure that your tranceive alignment is on. if it is wrong, your PTO could be transmitting higher freq than your receive. I hope some of this helps. 73's al kc9ys.

    Ted,
Well I am working on the audio now!!! I have only owned these
shortly and I absolutely love the receiver audio and the way it
all operates. If anyone else knows how they are supposed to
sound, it would be a real plus!!

    Hello
This is often the case with drakes their audio is tinny sounding
. Mine are the same way R4B - T4XB. If anyone knows of a way to
custom tailor or pad the audio to let a few lows through I'd like
    to hear it.

I have had this discussion before with a few guys and they
thought that carrier balance could be off or the filters are not
where they should be or component values have changed over the
years. If that is the case I would not really know how to attack
    the problem .

Maybe someone who had a Drake new back in the day could tell the
group if this is just normal comm. audio..

    Hello to all,
Just purchased a beautiful set of drake twins, r4 and t4x, they
are an absolute joy to operate. My only problem is with the
tx audio. I get reports of it being very trebly (if thats a
word). I am using a shure 444 with it. Hope to enjoy these
rigs for a long time. I sold a ts 2000 to purchase them and I
am glad I did. Love the vintage tube stuff!!
    Tnx
