I should have thought & ckd before I jumped in - the 2-BQ is on 455kc, I
was thinking 50, the 2nd IF. But still, I suspect it'd be tough to pad
either down to 50 from 455.

I suspect you won't be able to pad it that much and still have it work
acceptably, if at all. Add some inductance as well.
And take a look at the 2-BQ ckt for ideas.
