John et all,
The issue was how to remove the sticky residue from the SPR-4 crystal
selector dial after removing the old labels. The labels were very
difficult to remove, so I'm guessing they had been there for a lot of years.
I obviously needed something that would clean off the residue without
risking damage to the plastic dial.
Some of the suggestions from the list were Goo Gone, lighter fluid,
Coleman stove fuel, WD-40, lacquer thinner, and a couple of others that
I cannot remember right now.
I tried Goo Gone first, but over two hours worth of soaking and
scrubbing hardly made a dent in the sticky stuff. I skipped the lighter
fluid, Coleman stove fuel, and lacquer thinner 'cause I didn't have any
and next went to the WD-40 which I did have.
Since WD-40 is water-based, I figured it couldn't hurt the plastic.
Sprayed some on and scrubbed with a clean, dry cloth. Repeated several
times and, to my surprise, I had a clean, nearly pristine dial in about
15 minutes.
Thanks again to the list for all the suggestions and especially K8AC who
suggested the WD-40,

Hey Jim, for those of us who need a recap can you go over the whole process
again. What was the reason and what was the solution?
Thanks,
John

OK. It looks like WD40 is the answer. Took less than 10 minutes and the
dial is clean!
Thanks to K8AC for suggesting it.

I bought some Goo Gone yesterday and spent two hours trying to get the
residue off. Some of it loosened up and could be rubbed off, but there
remains a layer that acts almost like it has become one with the plastic.
Other suggestions that have been received include lighter fluid or
Coleman stove fuel, and WD40.
WD40 is water-based so I'll try it next and see how that goes.
I'll post my results later.
Thanks to all who sent me suggestions.
