obvious question I was expecting to read was "How can I help?"...

I really don't know the answers to your questions. I just want to point 
out that if people just understood the amount of effort that is to pull 
out an complete driver they would know that the time it takes depends of 
either a strong support for the vendor, or the number of volunteers 
working on it.

So while people just keep asking when is foo or bar ready, but don't do 
much about it, there will be several chips that will never get supported 
due to this huge difference between the fast developement of this 
techonology and the limited oopen-source manpower allocated to DRI...
