It depends which drivers you are using.  If this is the XFree-4.2 standard, 
then the reason is (thanks to Gareth Hughes) the tdfx driver in that release 
was head & shoulders above the others in terms of how it dealt with unclipped 
primitives (such as in gears).  Also, gears performance has a lot to do with 
buffer clearing and swapping, which to do properly on the radeon requires 
access to HyperZ functionality, which we don't have.

That said, on the tcl-0-0-branch with page flipping enabled, I get 2200 fps 
for gears on a celeron-1000, radeon 7500.
