I'm curious. Does the requirement that contributions be under BSD preclude drizzle from including other GPL software? For example, could a GPL crypto package be included with drizzle?

I have great sympathy for Brian position. It is so much more fun to talk about what software can do that to bicker about keeping folks we don't think we like from using it.

Without Sun's support, Brian, Jay, and Stewart wouldn't be available, at least at Sun's expense, for drizzle. If Sun would like to retain the illusion that they could somebody benefit monetarily from it, who is to blame them?

So let's concentrate on inclusion and just skip the focus on exclusion.

Personally, I like open source because it means that people can work at the cutting edge of technology without having to re-implement the same boring stuff over and over and over. As I've said many times, the worst thing about starting yet another database company is having to write another stinking string to date function. Oracle's going to make me do it again. Fie, Oracle! Fie! Fie! I intensely dislike GPLs fixation on preventing people from getting benefit from freely available software, but not enough to argue with Brian.
