Tim Donohue commented on DS-1004:
---------------------------------
Mark,
Sorry for any confusion here. We had put a call out for volunteers to look at
this issue, and I must not have realized you were interested. I do recall you
helping on a thread in dspace-tech. But as none of that discussion came back to
the official ticket in JIRA, I must have not understood that you were
interested in acting as the steward for this work. In the future, it's
probably best to just assign yourself in JIRA to make it clearer.
As far as the DCAT discussion goes -- most DCAT members are not on dspace-devel
(as that list is so highly technical). The DCAT discussion did happen outside
of mailing lists. They directly emailed Richard (and Peter) specifically
because they had volunteered on DS-587 (as DCAT uses JIRA as the primary means
of communication with everyone on the latest status of issues).
So, this was not an attempt to "hide" discussion from anyone. I think it
really just came about because DCAT was interested in the latest status of
DS-587, so they reached out to Richard & Peter. In the end, all the code came
right back into JIRA. Richard posted his own implementation idea back to JIRA
for public comment. You even commented & expressed concerns yourself on DS-996,
which were taken into account and made us realize this feature request may need
to be delayed. So, in the end, I still see feel that the vast majority of this
discussion happened in JIRA (I think the only discussion that was non-public
was a small email thread asking Richard & Peter about latest status).
I also wonder if part of the miscommunication here was that the 'dspace-tech'
thread never actually mentioned DS-587 by name (and the subject was nothing
related to 'tombstones'). Obviously, I expect some DCAT members are on
dspace-tech, but they may not have closely read that thread.
But, obviously, if we'd like to interact with DCAT in other ways, we can make
those suggestions. So far, the easiest route has seemed to be JIRA (as that
provides a way for DCAT to view the "official status" of a particular ticket,
while also allowing them to not have to sit in on all the highly detailed
technical discussions on dspace-devel). Obviously, we need to be aware that
oftentimes DCAT is less concerned about technical implementation details (which
are often what is on dspace-devel) & more concerned about just getting general
status updates and recommending new features that they feel would be of great
benefit.
As we are now a bit "off topic" on this Jira ticket (which is fine though as
this is good discussion!), we may want to move this discussion elsewhere. We
could always start a thread on dspace-tech to discuss how we'd like to more
closely interact with DCAT and either invite them to join that thread or
forward suggestions back to them as we see fit. There may be improvements that
can be made in our current communication processes with DCAT.

> Companion to DS-587 - that is, a configurable tombstone 'reason'. The primary
> difference is that XMLUI never displayed a tombstone page at all,
> just the (erroneous) RestrictedItem page. This restores the parity between
> JSPUI and XMLUI
