I'm afraid this might not be as simple as it seems. The main XML
document processed by the XSLT templates is called DRI. DRI then links
to some other auxiliary XML documents, most notably the METS document
which contains metadata of individual items. So you were right that
"context is off somehow".

The snippet you pasted is called in a template that matches
"mets:file", i.e. the METS document. So any elements in this template
are relative to the root of the METS document. When you take it and
paste it to another template (other templates usually match the DRI
document), the element doesn't exist in DRI.

You didn't mention where exactly you want that information to display
(in which template?).
