We solved this in a completely different way -- not sure if this is an
option for you.

We wrote a curation task to add all mimetypes of an item's public files
to the item's metadata (dc.format.mimetype) -- eg
http://otago.ourarchive.ac.nz/handle/10523/2278?show=full or
http://otago.ourarchive.ac.nz/handle/10523/1531?show=full for a more
complex example. We then use the metadata value in the theme to show
filetype icons or thumbnails in item lists -- eg
http://otago.ourarchive.ac.nz/.

The curation task is here
https://github.com/lconz-irr/Curation-Tasks/blob/master/src/main/java/nz/ac/lconz/irr/curate/task/AnnotateWithBitstreamFormats.java.
Our theme basically uses a mix of the "file" emphasis and the "metadata"
emphasis modes in Mirage for itemSummaryList-DIM. I'm happy to share
more details about the theme if you like.

cheers,
Andrea
