Yes, you understand the problem correctly. The way I solved this problem before is to assign whe value matched in METS mode to a variable and then display the value of this variable in DIM. However, in your case you would need more than one variable - one for each item, and you may not know how many will be displayed. I'm not sure what is the best way to proceed.
A clean way would probably mean rewriting at least <xsl:template match="dim:dim" mode="itemSummaryList-DIM-file"> completely (probably also many other related templates) to have their root not at dim:dim, but at mets:METS. From this root, it would be easy to reach both into dim:dim and mets:file. I haven't tested this approach, the required modifications might prove extensive. BTW which theme are you using?
