I would normally agree with you, but in this particular case, the fact we
have no more active developer working on the project makes me reluctant to
have a new release for now… until someone is able to take over development.

It is not a question of Debian or not. The hash driver is a supported
backend, and must be fixed, whatever the default driver is in Debian,
Fedora, or whatever other distribution.
