If the radio is heating up, that's an indication that it is charging. I commonly leave mine own while charging. Check the well wart and see what the current capacity is. They've switched through a couple of devices through the life of the radio. A 1A charger should be well sufficient to charge and listen.
I don't know how old your 91AD is, but they are now getting old enough that some of the batteries are nearing old age.
