Hello Walt:
I use my 2400c for programming, text manipulation, eMail, Internet
searches, fax, graphic and database work. When I'm using MiniCad to
design my new house, I listen to the BBC news feed. So, I don't have
any particular complaints about the ability of the hardware or the
apps to handle my work. The OS is another matter. I use 8.6 mainly
because the OS delivered with my 2400c was impossibly unstable. My
irritation with the OS has two sources; system instability and
limited system capabilities.
I think we need so many "valued" extensions and utilities primarily
because MacOS developers have concentrated so singlemindedly on
appearance, basic utility has suffered. What sort of a mind believes
three dimensional icons are more important to the average user than,
say, the ability to assign PgUp-PgDn to keys of one's own choice
using the installed operating system?
I will upgrade to OSX if it is more stable than Linux and offers me
greater capabilities. At this point I trust the hundreds of more or
less anonymous Linux developers more than I trust Apple. Mr Jobs
won't get a bent farthing out of me until he delivers a portable at
least as convenient as the 2400c with a modern operating system to
run on it.
Best Wishes to you and all long suffering Mac users wherever they may languish.
